Question: What is the criteria to be in the Shelter?
Answer: Brigantia Place provides short term, safe and supportive residential services and basic emergency services for abused women in crisis and their children. We also provide accommodation for transient women, or women otherwise in crisis.

Question: Do I have to be physically abused to stay at the Shelter?
Answer: No, there are different kinds of abuse, not just physical, and women experience any type of abuse can stay at the Shelter. Abuse can be physical, emotional/psychological, financial and spiritual.

Question: I'm from outside of Alberta, can I still be a resident at the Shelter?
Answer: Yes. There is no geographical restriction to who can enter Brigantia Place.

Question: How long can I stay?
Answer: Women who are abused can stay in the Shelter up to three weeks, other women can stay in the Shelter for up to one week.

Question: How can I get to the Shelter?
Answer: You can call emergency social service, the police, or victim service, or your local FCSS office and ask them to help you get to the Shelter. You can also drop in the Shelter yourself.

Question: Can I bring children to the Shelter?
Answer: Yes, your children can stay with you in the Shelter.

Question: What happen to my children's schooling while I'm in the Shelter?
Answer: Your children can attend the School Program, which follows the Battle River Regional Division #31 curriculum, in the shelter.

Question: Can I bring pets to the Shelter?
Answer: No, you cannot bring pets to the Shelter, but we have volunteers who may look after your pets while you are at the Shelter.

Question: Can my relatives/family visit me in the Shelter?
Answer: Yes, your relatives are welcome to visit you, however, due to confidentiality, guests are restricted to the entrance of the Shelter.

Question: What is the smoking policy of the Shelter?
Answer: Smoking is allowed only outside.

Question: What is the drinking policy of the Shelter?
Answer: We believe in healthy environment for everyone at the Shelter, and hence no drinking is allowed in the Shelter, nor are people who may be under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Question: What should I bring with me to the Shelter?
Answer: You should bring all your ID and your children's ID, health care information, any document about your house, medication/prescription, bank card and information, money, comfort things (e.g. favorite blanket), clothes, and address book and contacts (e-mail, website, doctors, friends, etc.).

Question: Do you have extra clothing if I don't have my clothes with me?
Answer: We have some emergency clothing, and you can go to the Emergency Furniture and Clothing Depot to choose some clothes for yourself or your children, free of charge.

Question: Will I be safe in the Shelter?
Answer: Yes! Our security prrecautions include cameras which monitor entrances to the Shelter and each side of the building. We have an alarm system connected to all doors and windows. We also have procedures in place in case of high risk situations.

Question: What is the cost for me to stay in the Shelter?
Answer: There is no cost to stay at the Shelter.

Question: Where can I leave my car when I come to the Shelter?
Answer: You can leave your car in the parking lot in the back of the Shelter, or parked on the street our front.

Question: Will people find out that I'm in the Shelter?
Answer: Only if you tell them, or give us written permission to tell them. Confidentiality is our highest priority! We never confirm or deny if someone is in Shelter without that person's permission.


Question: Can I volunteer at the Shelter if I am male?
Answer: Yes!

Question: Can I volunteer at the Shelter if I have been a resident?
Answer: Yes, after you have been out of the Shelter for a year and no longer using the services, you may volunteer with the Shelter.
