Brigantia is an ancient female figure meaning light, protection and healing. She is found in various cultural backgrounds of many European countries and she was so revered in Ireland that the Roman Catholic Church canonized her as St. Brigit. Candelmas, or St. Brigit's Day is celebrated on February 2. On this day, candles are lit in Brigit's memory to symbolize her light. From this act, we are encouraged to bring to light our own healing, to become uniquely ourselves. Crosses, woven of wheat are hung in doorways for protection. Through the symbol of the cross the shelter shows that it can point the way to cross over to a better place. We believe that the name, Brigantia Place, is rich in symbolism, one honoring women and children on their journey to a safe and strong destination.

• All individuals have the right to live free of assaults, abuse and violence.
• No person should be forced to remain silent in a violent or abusive home because of the lack of alternatives.
• The right to integrity of the person includes the right to make informed choices among alternatives in one's own life decisions.
• Families should be protected from the invasion of their privacy except when the interests of individual family members and/or the interests of society are jeopardized.

Aim Statement

• Provide safe temporary shelter and basic needs requirements to women and children.
• Ensure that a qualified staff will provide support services, counseling, and education to explore and develop self-esteem, personal growth, and options of non-violence in personal relationships.
• Promote public awareness of Family Violence issues.
• Develop programs to establish a lifestyle free of abuse.
